The Lexington History Museum is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. The Lexington History Museum engages all people in the discovery and interpretation of the history of Lexington, Ky. and the Bluegrass Region. Incorporated in 1999, the Lexington History Museum, Inc. opened in the former Fayette County Courthouse in October 2003 in a partnership with the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government.
After nine successful years in the Old Fayette County Courthouse, the Lexington History Museum had to move out when the building was closed in 2012 to undergo renovations. LexHistory has reinvented itself to meet the challenge of not being able to offer a full-scale museum by establishing a series of Pocket Museums.
We will continue to offer exhibits to the public, through our pocket museum program and partnerships with other local institutions. In 2017, we joined the LexArts HOP, and will have six different exhibits on HOP dates in our offices at Suite 312, The Square, 401 West Main Street in Lexington. We also continue our education mission by offering outreach programs, including the Lexington History Museum Speaker Series. This web site will grow and evolve into our vision of the future of museums as existing as much online as in an exhibit hall. We recently added an exciting new feature, online virtual reality tours of selected displays, starting with the January 2017 LexArts HOP.
