The Agricultural Deposit Bank of Lexington was formed in 1856, with a capital base of three hundred thousand dollars. Its banking house was located on Jordan's Row (Upper Street between Main and Short Streets). The original Directors were John G. James (President), George W. Brand, John Norton, Oliver Farra, L. H. Chrisman, Dudley Portwood, Benjamin Tyler, James H. Hanna, Jesse Baker, Robert Young, Jordan Scott, Leslie Combs, William Simpson, Edwards Crosby, Silas P. Kenney (see Profiles), J. G. Kinnaird, A. Brand, Willa Viley and Sanders D. Bruce.
This firm was closely associated with the private bank of Grinstead & Bradley, with James A. Grinstead serving as its first Cashier. The firm operated until about the close of the Civil War.
