Richard T. Anderson was born during March 1839 in Fayette County, Kentucky. Graduating from Transylvania University shortly before the Civil War, he began raising trotting horses. Around 1867 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Agricultural and Mechanical College (later the University of Kentucky). In March 1870, he became a member of the private banking firm of Headley, Anderson & Company, but left two years later to become a director of the Northern Bank of Kentucky.
In 1885 Mr. Anderson was a founding director of Kentucky Trotting Horse Breeders Association, the operator of the Red Mile Race Track.
In 1886, Mr. Anderson participated in the founding of the Security Trust and Safety Vault Company. He served as the firm's Vice President and held this position until his death in 1911. He was also a director of the Lexington Cemetery Company, Phoenix Hotel Company (serving as the firm's President) and Breckinridge Monument Fund.
