A branch of the Bank of the United States opened in Lexington during January 1817. The first President was James Morrison and the directors included John Wesley Hunt. In 1827 John Tilford (father of John B. Tilford) was elected President, after the death of Charles Wilkins (who served as President from 1819). In 1835 the institution's charter was revoked and its banking operations taken over by the Northern Bank of Kentucky.
