In 1884, Benckart Grovery distributed Blue Licks Mineral Water in Central Kentucky.

By 1890, Matthew Benckart was an earlier bottler of soda pop / carbonated drinks in Lexington.  He was also a grocer (300 North Upper Street) and saloonkeeper.  In the 1890s, he was also the agent for the Christian Moerlain Brewing Company in Lexington.  He was prominent in Lexington civic affairs, serving a number of years as a ward boss and City Councilmen.  He was bottling as late as 1911.[i]
