Alex G. Campbell was born in Lexington, Kentucky on April 19, 1928. He was employed between 1946 and 1954 by Liggett-Meyers Tobacco Company. In 1954, he formed the Lexington Tobacco Storage Company and acquired W. L. Petty Company (tobacco sales). He disposed of the bulk of his tobacco holdings in 1965.
In addition, he became involved during the mid 1950s in real estate development - one of his first projects was the original IBM building on Russell Cave Road. During 1956, he established the Industry Development Company, with W. T. Young. Since the early 1960s, Mr. Campbell has been involved in the breeding and racing of thoroughbred horses.
Mr. Campbell has served as a director of First Security National Bank and Trust Company since 1968 and of First Security Corporation since 1975. He was the founder of the Triangle Foundation and serves on the Board of Directors of the Kentucky American Water Company. He married Anne Estill, the daughter of W. Rodes Estill.
