William H. Cassell was born in Jessamine County, Kentucky on December 5, 1840. He came to Lexington during 1860 to clerk for Allen Plunkett & Co. In 1862, Mr. Cassell joined the Confederate Army under General John C. Breckinridge and was captured in July 1863 by Federal forces. After being released from prison in June 1865, he returned to Lexington and became a partner in the firm of Gibney & Cassell.
In 1888, Mr. Cassell became the founding President of the Phoenix National Bank. He left that position in 1901 to become President of the Security Trust and Safety Vault Company. He was also a director of the Lexington Water Works, Lexington Steam Laundry, Transylvania Printing Company and held large investments in gold and silver mining companies in the Colorado Territory. He continued serving as President of the Security Trust until his death in 1916.
