Fred N. Coats, an automotive mechanic, started in the automotive industry with the Dayton Motor Car Company, Dayton, Ohio, which built the Stoddard-Dayton Motor Car. In 1909, he was hired to be the plant foreman for the Lexington Motor Car Company. He became the company General Manager and managed the day-to-day affairs of the company.[i] In 1910, he relocated to Connersville, Indiana, and continued as the General Manager until 1913.
