The son of Josiah and Jane Ann (Shouse) Felix. He was born in Woodford County, Kentucky on October 6, 1838.
He graduated from Georgetown College in June 1860, and was ordained by Doctor Duncan R. Campbell. He was called to the Baptist Church at New Castle in Henry County. He also read the law and was admitted to the bar in 1862. Afterword he practiced law for one year in Shelbyville, before he was called to take the 1st Baptist Church in Lexington Kentucky. In 1870, he was called to the 1st Baptist Church of Covington. He was called to the Baptist Church of Lexington in 1887.
In 1861, he married Mattie Haydon, daughter of Thomas Haydon of Louisville. Together they had four children before she passed away in 1871. In 1875, he married Camila Hemmingray, together they had two children.
