He is President of his family's farm, Claiborne Farm, an international business focusing on breeding and raising world-class Thoroughbred racehorses. His clientele includes prominent businessmen from America, Canada, England, Ireland, France, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Japan.
Becoming President of the farm in 1972 at age 23, he bought a champion two year-old colt that year who had just won the Eclipse Award. He did the unheard of and paid a world-record price to syndicate the colt before it had proven its quality in the Triple Crown races for three-year-olds. That colt, Secretariat, won the Triple Crown and became a national hero.
Through his daily supervision of his own and client's horses he maintains a reputation as a keen horseman, and continues to demonstrate the ability required to make decisions focused on raising champions and graded stakes winners.
Besides attending daily stallion breeding sessions to observe the progress of each stallion, he also supervises the yearling division as the farm's horsemen break approximately 100 yearlings in training.
Claiborne has a nursery known for raising outstanding racehorses and standing the world's leading stallions. It is commonplace for four or five of the top 20 sires in the world to stand at Claiborne Farm.
His farm transactions involve 3,400 acres in Paris, Ky., including 47 barns, 475 horses and 130 employees.
Innumerable racing industry awards include several of the coveted Eclipse Awards. Claiborne Farm was selected by the Lexington Better Business Bureau to receive their Business Integrity Award for 1993.
Seth W. Hancock was named to the Hall of Distinguished Alumni on April 21, 1995.
