Jacob Hughes was born during 1791 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. After his father's death, he settled around 1813 on the Briar Hill Road on sixty acres. By hard work, Mr. Hughes acquired over five thousand eight hundred acres while conducting an extensive farming operation. During the Civil War, he was a strong supporter of the Union. At the war's end, Mr. Hughes became the first President of the newly formed First National Bank, serving until his death in 1874.
One daughter, Harriett Hughes, married Colonel William R. Estill (which see) and another daughter, Jane R. Hughes, married R. B. Graves (a director of the Lexington City National Bank and their son, Jacob Hughes Graves, was founder of the Second National Bank).
