Hunt, Joseph D.

1838 - 1920

Attorney and Banker.

Judge Joseph D. Hunt was born in Fayette County, Kentucky on August 14, 1838.  After graduating from Centre College in 1854 at the age of sixteen, and the University of Louisville's Law School in 1857, he began practicing law.  In September 1862, he joined the Confederate Army under General John Hunt Morgan and was captured on General Morgan's Ohio Raid in July 1863.

After the war, Mr. Hunt moved to Lexington and was appointed City Attorney (1868 to 1869).  He was also a District Judge from 1873 until 1880.  Judge Hunt was the founding President of the Security Trust and Safety Vault Company in 1886 and served two years, before leaving to be President of the Northern Bank (1888 until 1897).  In 1897, Judge Hunt once again became a director of the Security Trust Company (from 1897 until 1919).  He died during September 1920.
