In January 1906, the National Exchange Bank and Central Bank combined to form the Lexington Banking and Trust Company. The bank opened its doors on February 1, 1906 in the old Northern Bank Building on Short Street at Market. John L. Barkley, Benjamin T. Head and Christopher D. Chenault were appointed President, Vice President and Cashier, respectively. The Articles of Incorporation listed over one hundred and fifty stockholders. In April 1906, the bank's first financial statement was published, showing deposits of six hundred thousand dollars and loans of over one million dollars.

In 1907, the bank settled the estate of famed distiller James E. Pepper. The Jas. E. Pepper & Company was the largest distillery in Kentucky and located on Old Frankfort Pike.
Mr. Barkley was succeeded in 1908 by Edward L. Hutchinson as President, who was succeeded in 1912 by John M. Kelly. In March 1913, the bank's assets and operations were assumed by the Phoenix & Third Trust Company.
