Mr. McCorkle was born in Lexington, VA on May 9, 1861. He was educated at the county schools of Rockbridge County. In 1879 he moved to New York, where he worked in the cotton commission business until 1883.
He moved to Lexington, KY in 1883, where he worked raising stock until 1887, when he became a junior member of the dry goods firm of McMichael and McCorkle. In 1887, he married Sarah B. McMichael, the daughter of Robert McMichael.
Mr. McCorkle was a democrat. He was a member of the Board of Aldermen, elected in 1893 and served as Chairman of the Joint Ways and Means Committee. He also served as a member of the Board of School Trustees.
