James E. "Jimmy Mac" McFarland was born around 1861 in Nicholasville, Kentucky and moved to Lexington in 1874.  His banking career started in 1885 with the National Exchange Bank (serving as Cashier from 1892 to 1902).

In 1906, he joined the City National Bank as a Vice President, maintaining that position after the combinations with the First National Bank and the Phoenix National Bank in 1913 and 1929, respectively.  He was appointed a director after the merger with the First National Bank, serving until his death during 1952.
