Attorney and Banker.
James P. Metcalfe was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky on December 17, 1822. After graduating from law school, he practiced law and during the 1850s served in the General Assembly for Nicholas County. Mr. Metcalfe relocated to Lexington around the time of the Civil War and served as the founding President of the National Exchange Bank from 1878 to 1881. He had extensive business connections and a substantial fortune. He died in Detroit on July 16, 1889, while visiting his daughter.
