Joseph W. Porter was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky on December 9, 1862. Immediately after his birth, his family moved to a farm outside the city limits of Lexington. After finishing first in his class at the University (now Transylvania), he taught at several colleges before assuming the Latin and Mathematics Chair (in 1889) at the Hamilton College, Lexington. In July 1899, he was placed in charge of the failed Blue Grass Building and Loan Association and settled its affairs.
In 1905, he became the Cashier of the newly formed Union Bank and Trust Company. By 1910, Mr. Porter was associated with the First National Bank, serving as its Cashier until the merger in 1913. After that merger, he served as the Cashier of the First & City National Bank until his retirement in the late 1920s. He died in April 1932.
