During 1884, Richard H. Courtney founded a private bank and brokerage business in Lexington. R. H. Courtney & Company operated on the southeast corner of Upper and Short Street. Mr. Courtney moved to Lexington in 1873 to join D. A. Sayre & Company and married a daughter of Ephraim D. Sayre. Around 1900, he relocated to Louisville (his hometown) but retained numerous banking connections in the Lexington area.
