John T. Shelby was born in Springfield, Kentucky on January 25, 1851 and came to live on his father's farm in Lexington during 1854. He was educated at Centre College and the Kentucky University before graduating from Princeton in 1870. He began practicing law in Lexington during 1872 and served as City Attorney from 1873 to 1874. During September 1875, he entered into a law partnership with Colonel William C. P. Breckinridge that lasted until Colonel Breckinridge's death in 1904. Thereafter, he practiced law with his son, J. Craig Shelby.
Mr. Shelby was one of the organizers of the Passenger & Belt Electric Line, Fayette Home Telephone Company and Lexington Business College. Mr. Shelby served as President of the First National Bank in 1908 and as a director of the First & City National Bank from 1913 to 1920. He died in March 1920.
