Colonel Robert R. Stone was born in Madison County, Kentucky on August 24, 1817. He was a graduate of the Harvard Law School, but never practiced law. After receiving a large inheritance, he operated a large farm in Madison County until the outbreak of the Civil War. He served as a Colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War.
After the war, Colonel Stone relocated to Lexington around 1870 and became the founding President of the Fayette National Bank.
In May 1874, after leaving the Fayette National in 1873, Colonel Stone founded R. R. Stone & Company, a private bank, located on Jordan's Row at 9 Upper Street. He was a director of the Security Trust and Safety Vault Company during the late 1880s. After suffering a stroke in November 1891, he retired from business. He died in October 1893 at "Lyndhurst," his home.
