Hemp Merchant and Banker.
Avery S. Winston was born during 1848 in New Orleans. After attending college in New Jersey, he traveled to Germany in 1860 to complete his education. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. Winston returned to America and enlisted in the Confederate Army's famed Washington Artillery Unit. In 1862, he was transferred to the Confederate Navy and fought in the Battle of Mobile Bay during 1864. After the war, he returned to New Orleans where he met his future wife, Amanda Frazer.
In 1866, he moved to Lexington and entered the hemp business with his father-in-law. He continued in the hemp business until shortly before his death. In 1878, Mr. Winston became the President of the First National Bank, serving in that capacity until illness forced his retirement in 1905. He was also President of the Western Ice Company, later the West End and City Ice Company. Mr. Winston was the founding President of the Chamber of Commerce in 1882. He died on March 15, 1908, after a long illness.
