The Phoenix Hotel, which was founded in 1790s as Postlethwait’s Tavern, occupied the corner of Main Street and Limestone for 170 years in a variety of buildings. The hotel played host to two different Presidential visits; one by President James Monroe in 1819 and one by President Chester A Arthur, in 1883.
